Abstract

The convergence of SAP S/4HANA—the world's most widely deployed in-memory Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) platform—with artificial intelligence (AI) technologies represents a defining inflection point in enterprise software management. This article offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary examination of how organisations can combine the transactional power of SAP S/4HANA with the cognitive capabilities of machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), generative AI, and intelligent process automation to create what SAP terms the Intelligent Enterprise. We systematically review the AI technology landscape within the SAP ecosystem, encompassing SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), SAP AI Core and AI Launchpad, the Joule generative AI copilot, and embedded intelligent scenarios across all major S/4HANA functional domains—Finance (FI/CO), Procurement and Materials Management (MM), Sales and Distribution (SD), Production Planning (PP), Plant Maintenance (PM), Quality Management (QM), and Human Capital Management (HCM).
