Abstract

Smart collagen membranes capable of releasing growth factors only under inflammatory conditions
represent an emerging strategy in regenerative medicine and dentistry. Conventional collagen membranes
provide structural support and barrier functions but often release incorporated bioactive molecules in an
uncontrolled manner, resulting in reduced therapeutic efficiency and unnecessary depletion of regenerative
agents. In contrast, inflammation-responsive collagen membranes are engineered to recognize pathological
signals such as acidic pH, elevated enzymatic activity, or increased reactive oxygen species, thereby
enabling localized and controlled release of growth factors precisely when tissue repair is required.
This targeted approach enhances cellular proliferation, angiogenesis, extracellular matrix remodeling,
and bone and soft tissue regeneration while minimizing premature release and potential adverse effects.
Advances in biomaterial engineering, nanotechnology, and controlled drug delivery have facilitated the
development of multifunctional collagen membranes with improved biocompatibility, biodegradability,
and therapeutic performance. These membranes have demonstrated promising applications in periodontal
regeneration, guided bone regeneration, implant dentistry, wound healing, and regenerative endodontics.
Despite encouraging experimental outcomes, challenges related to manufacturing complexity, growth
factor stability, large-scale production, and clinical translation remain. Continued research into smart
biomaterials is expected to optimize membrane design, improve regenerative outcomes, and support
the development of more predictable, personalized, and biologically responsive therapies for oral and
craniofacial tissue regeneration.
